In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly from May 2023, Tom Holland shared that he has maintained sobriety for over a year.
Through his involvement in the series The Crowded Room, the actor gained insights that helped him identify his personal stressors and triggers.
He remarked, "Learning about mental health and the power of it, and speaking to psychiatrists about Danny (his character) and Billy's struggles, has been something that has been so informative to my own life."
Holland expressed his hope that viewers would gain a deeper understanding and compassion for those battling mental health challenges after watching the miniseries.
He said, "I hope that people will feel educated about the powers of mental health, the struggles, [and] our incredible abilities to survive."
Discussing the rigorous emotional demands of the role, Holland acknowledged his familiarity with the physical demands from his action films. However, the mental challenges presented by this role were unique.
"But the mental aspect, it really beat me up, and it took a long time for me to recover afterwards, to sort of get back to reality," he confessed.
In one candid revelation, the Spider-Man actor admitted there was a time he felt overwhelmed by the weight of his character, considering drastic measures to disconnect.
He recalled, "I was seeing myself in him, but in my personal life, I remember having a bit of a meltdown at home and thinking, like, “I'm going to shave my head. I need to shave my head, because I need to get rid of this character.” Yet, given the production timeline, he held back, adding, "It was unlike anything I've ever experienced before."
